The commander of Womack Army Medical Center called it the single most impactful change to military medicine in the last 25 years.

But for the vast majority of the Fort Bragg hospital’s staff and patients, the change that took place on Oct. 1 went unnoticed.

Womack, one of the nation’s largest military medical facilities, became the first Army hospital to transition to the Defense Health Agency.

“It was seamless,” said Col. John J. Melton, the hospital’s commander. “No drama. No fanfare.”
